Throughout college, Leana worked as a research assistant for the Institute for Global Health at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) with an emphasis in HIV/AIDS studies.
Currently, Leana is serving as a HIV/AIDS Program Volunteer with the Municipio de Guayaquil in the city of Guayaquil. As a volunteer, Leana has spent the first few months in site doing pre and post HIV/AIDS consejerias, surveillance of HIV/AIDS test promotion in the Municipio run hospitals and giving mini-charlas in the hospital waiting rooms.
As a Peace Corps volunteer, Leana’s goals are to help improve HIV/AIDS education and the promotion of HIV/AIDS test with patients in the Municipio de Guayaquil run hospitals. Her main project will be working at Hospital Jacobo y Maria Elena Ratinoff doing HIV/AIDS consejerias and charlas. In the near future, Leana plans to begin teaching the “Cuanto Sabes de VIH y SIDA” program in high schools in Guayaquil.
After serving in the Peace Corps, Leana hopes to return to school to receive a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) and then apply to medical school.
