ThirdGoal.org - Celebrating 50 Years of Peace Corps

New Website Collects Peace Corps Stories, Photos, Videos

On the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps, a new website is bringing together Returned Peace Corps Volunteers from every era and country in the program’s history. ThirdGoal.org is a non-profit grassroots effort designed to collect their memories and images to mark the 2011 celebration of Peace Corps’ 50th Anniversary.

ThirdGoal.org members represent all generations of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, from some of the earliest participants who answered the call of President John F. Kennedy and founding Director Sargent Shriver to recent college graduates serving today. The site features stories, photos and videos from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, and South America.

“I wanted a place where Peace Corps Volunteers could creatively carry out the Third Goal — to bring our service home and educate Americans about the world around them,” said Andrew T. Meyerson, the creator of ThirdGoal.org, who served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco from 2005-2007.

Since its launch in late 2010, ThirdGoal.org has collected over 1,000 stories, photos and videos from nearly 500 returned and active volunteers and is now growing at a rate of nearly 100 submissions every week.

“Serving in Peace Corps was the most rewarding chapter of my life,” said Rob Wilson, an Environmental Community Development Specialist who served in Poland from 1999 to 2001. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share these experiences with a new generation of Peace Corps Volunteers.”

The culmination of ThirdGoal.org’s 50th anniversary efforts will be a Peace Corps commemorative coffee-table book to be published in Fall 2011, featuring the best stories and photos collected on the site.

RPCV Chris Matthews (Swaziland '68-'70) memorialized Sargent Shriver on MSNBC's Hardball: "There are 200,000 of us who had this added to our lives by this great man, this great American, Sarge Shriver… I owe much to Sarge Shriver, so do hundreds of thousands of others, and so does America, and so do millions of people out there in the world who you'll never get to, who got to know us through the Peace Corps, got to learn from us, and got to teach us… What a great man we lost today. God take him, for all of us who loved him."
