What is the Third Goal?

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship.

The Peace Corps' mission has three simple goals:

1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

At ThirdGoal.org, we abbreviate the official Third Goal as simply "bringing your service home" and helping Americans to better understand the world around us. Sometimes Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will give presentations to schools, write op-eds in local newspapers, or simply share photos and stories about one's experience with family and friends. But for most of us, fulfilling our Third Goal responsibilities is a daily labour of love that looks something like this:
